The Association of Students at ETH (VSETH) is the umbrella organization for students at ETH Zurich . The association represents the interests of the student body externally and towards the university . In contrast to the situation in many other countries, Switzerland does not have its own legal form for student representatives (such as the German AStA ), which is why the VSETH is an association under Swiss law . Through a contract with the university, he is the official representative of all students at the bachelor and master level within the framework of the ETH . According to its own information, 10,000 of the approximately 12,000 students (excluding doctoral students) are members.

history

The association was founded seven years after the founding of the ETH Zurich (then a polytechnic) in the winter of 1862 . In the beginning, the association was a connection very similar, but never had the hierarchical for this so typical structure of members. Shortly after its founding, the association management at the time fell out with the school management of the Polytechnic, which led to the departure of half of the students at the time.

The association achieved its greatest success in 1969 when it alone held the referendum against the new ETH law and this was rejected at the ballot box. Although a new ETH law came into force in 1992, which did not differ significantly from the one that was rejected in 1969, the right of students to have a say in ETH matters has been significantly expanded since then.

In the 1970s, the VSETH was increasingly politically shaped, which led to the foundation of the SOS ETH , an apolitical student association. For two decades, the two associations shared the representation of students at the ETH level. Today the VSETH is again deliberately apolitical and, together with its professional associations, is the only student body at ETH.

In 2008 the association received official status through a framework agreement with the university.

In 2012 VSETH celebrated its 150th anniversary with the 150th anniversary of VSETH program .

tasks

The VSETH is active in two areas:

  • He is the official university political representative of the students. This means that representatives of the VSETH have a seat on various bodies at ETH Zurich, for example the university assembly, and bring in the interests of the students there.
  • It offers all kinds of services for the student body, primarily through its professional associations and commissions. These include the administration of the ETH premises provided for students and the organization of parties and events. Various other services such as collections of old exams are also available through the specialist associations.

Events

First semester festival

At the beginning of the academic year, the VSETH welcomes new students with the so-called first semester festival. With around 5,000 participants, it is one of the largest student parties in Switzerland and has been taking place on the Hönggerberg campus for several years.

Golden owl

The Golden Owl is a sympathy award given by the students to the lecturers at ETH Zurich. It is awarded annually by the VSETH and honors particularly committed teachers who offer their students excellent teaching.

All ETH members with a teaching position can win the Golden Owl. One teacher will be awarded per department. The award ceremony is held every year as part of the ETH Day.

financing

For a student organization, VSETH is unusually financially strong. This results from the fact that, in addition to a voluntary membership fee and mandatory student fees, he also organizes his own contact and company fairs with the Forum & Contact Commission (polymesse). At these events, companies have the opportunity to get to know students as future employees for a fee.

Various professional associations (such as computer science, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering or civil and environmental engineering) also offer specialized company fairs.

Professional associations

The VSETH is an umbrella organization. There is a professional association for all subjects that can be studied at ETH Zurich, which only represents the interests of the students in the subject. All professional associations of ETH Zurich are organized in VSETH, currently these are:
