Alexander Tschirkow

Alexánder Semjónovitsch Chirkov ( Ukrainian Олександр Семенович Чирков * 1. November 1941 in Kamyshin , Volgograd Oblast , USSR ) is a Ukrainian literary critic , essayist , who holds the chair of German literature and world literature and the Head of the Scientific and Artistic Complex "drama" at the Institute for Foreign Language Philology at the Ivan Franko State University of Zhytomyr , member of the Academy of Sciences of the Universities of Ukraine.

Tschirkow has made a name for himself above all through his Bertolt Brecht research and studies on the poetics of epic drama and the nature of drama and theater in general. Following his initiative, the Brecht Center was founded in 2008 at the Institute for Foreign Language Philology at the Ivan Franko State University in Zhytomyr. With the decisive support of the Bertolt Brecht Archive in Berlin and especially its director Erdmut Wizisla , Brechtian readings take place annually - an international literary conference held by Brecht researchers from Germany, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine. The annual philological journal "Brecht-Heft", which Tschirkow founded and supervised scientifically, has been published since 2011.
