Alexander Trunk

Alexander Trunk (born February 2, 1957 in Nuremberg ) is a German legal scholar . Since May 1, 1998, he has held the chair for Civil Law and Eastern European Law and Director of the Institute for Eastern European Law at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

Trunk studied law in Munich and Geneva . In 1990 he received his doctorate in Munich and completed his habilitation in 1997. From 1993–1994 he completed a research stay at the University of California, Berkeley . 2010–2012 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Kiel (2008–2010 and 2012–2014 Vice Dean).

Furthermore, Trunk is co-chair of the DRJI (German-Russian Legal Institute), a cooperative institution of universities and practical institutions from the German and Russian language areas, which promotes the legal dialogue between Germany, the EU and Russia at university level. Trunk is also Deputy Chairman (2019 Chairman) of the Center for East European Studies at the University of Kiel and head of the Kiel branch of the German Society for Eastern European Studies eV He is a member of the scientific advisory board of the European Association of the German economy and a member of the editorial board of various journals on Eastern European law or in Eastern Europe.

He is an honorary doctor of the Tbilisi State University and an honorary professor of the Urals State Law University (Ekaterinburg).

The focus of Trunks' academic work lies in comparative law, in particular with Eastern European law (especially Russia), in international private and procedural law and in insolvency law.

He led several international cooperation projects with comparative law issues and focus on the region of Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region, among others. a. on foreign investment law and international trade law in the Caucasus-Central Asia-Russia region. Several projects have an interdisciplinary dimension.

Trunk is the founder and co-editor of the Kieler Schriften für Ostrecht as well as the papers of the Center for Eastern European Studies at the University of Kiel. He founded the journal Kieler Ostrechts-Notizen (Kiel Journal of East European Law - Kil'skij Zhurnal Vostochno-Evropejskogo Prava) published by the Institute for Eastern European Law since 1997.
