Alexander Wagner (musician)

Alexander Wagner (born May 31, 1926 in Berlin ; † December 19, 2019 in Detmold ) was a German composer, choir teacher and choir conductor and textbook author.

Live and act

He attended the French high school in Berlin . From 1957 to 1992 he was professor of choral conducting and conducting at the Detmold University of Music .

Wagner studied with Paul Höffer and Wilhelm Maler as well as choir conducting with Kurt Thomas in Detmold . From 1949 to 1994 he was cantor and organist at the Christ Church in Detmold. In 1957 he succeeded his former teacher Kurt Thomas as professor in the post of university professor for choral conducting and conducting at the then Northwest German Music Academy Detmold, today's University of Music. In 1995 he was awarded the Culture Prize of the Lippe Regional Association for outstanding cultural achievements.

Alexander Wagner was co-editor and co-author of the new edition of the choral music and oratorio guide from the Reclam publishing house , one of the standard works on choral literature.

Wagner was married and had four children. His son Alexis Wagner is a freelance opera singer and university lecturer in the artistic field of singing at the Detmold University of Music.
