Wiskowatow was particularly well-known for his extensive research on Russian military history, which he carried out on behalf of Tsar Nicholas I from 1835 onwards. The complete collection of 4,000 sheets today exists only in museums in St. Petersburg and Washington, DC A three-volume excerpt with 493 color lithographs , which the Tsar in 1842 Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. Of Mecklenburg had given and the Schwerin State Library come was lost at the end of World War II in 1945, probably as looted art . These volumes reappeared in 2008 when they were due to be auctioned at Sotheby’s . The restitution is still pending.
