Alexander of Rome (martyr, † 130)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander of Rome (* 1st century in Rome ; † 130 ibid) was a Roman martyr . The Catholic feast day is May 3rd and is identical to that of the Bishop of Rome, Alexander I. This led to the fact that both were equated early on.

Alexander suffered his martyrdom around 130 under the reign of Emperor Hadrian , together with Eventius , Theodulus and Hermas . In 1855 his grave was discovered on Via Nomentana .

The Passio Alexandri - the story of the martyrdom of Saints Alexander and Theodulus - originated as a handwriting in what is now northern Iraq and reached Deir el Surian, the Syrian monastery in the Egyptian desert. From there she came to London. Part of it is in the Mesrob Mashtots Institute for Ancient Manuscripts in Erevan (Armenia).
