Alexanderstollen in Ostwig

The Alexanderstollen is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the municipality of Bestwig in the district of Ostwig . The tunnel is located just after the southern exit of the village in Steinberg opposite the Elpe on district road 15 in the direction of Gevelinghausen .

history

The tunnel , which was formerly used for the extraction of lead , was built in 1854 to secure supplies for the Ostwiger Friedrich-Wilhelm-Hütte. However, no lead ores were found in the tunnel.

stollen

The main tunnel , driven in a northeasterly direction , is approx. 92 meters long, 1.8 meters high and 1.4 meters wide. The entire pit is around 135 meters long. About 64 meters from the entrance, a 10.5 meter long stretch branches off to the southeast. At the same time, a 10.5 meter long stretch was driven 5 meters away. Another stretch was laid in a northerly direction. At the entrance you can still see the remains of the old rails. Several hiking trails lead to the tunnel.
