Alexandros "Alekos" Alavanos ( Greek Αλέκος Αλαβάνος , born May 22, 1950 in Athens ) is a left-wing Greek politician .

Life

Alavanos studied economics . From 1981 to 2004 he was a member of the European Parliament . In 2004 he became a member of the Greek Parliament . From 2004 to 2008 he succeeded Nikos Konstantopoulos as chairman of the Greek party Synaspismos and from 2007 president of the alliance SYRIZA . He was followed by Alexis Tsipras .

In 2011 Alavanos left the Synaspismos party and co-founded the left-wing party Front of Solidarity and Change .

Alavanos criticizes the course of Syriza , which is fighting the austerity policy to cope with the financial and economic crisis , but advocates Greece remaining in the euro. In April 2013 he called the new party Schedio B ("Plan B") into being. The new party wants to rely on those Greeks who plead for their country to leave the euro zone. Schedio B explains in a 10-point plan that the exit from the euro zone and the return to a national currency are essential to save the country and to rebuild the economy and a welfare state. The founding congress of Schedio B took place on May 18 and 19, 2013.

Alavanos is married to Ekaterini Charalambaki and has two children.
