Alexei Georgievich Postnikow ( Russian Алексей Георгиевич Постников , English transcription Aleksei Georgievich Postnikov ; born June 12, 1921 in Moscow , † March 22, 1995 ) was a Russian mathematician who dealt with analytical number theory .

Postnikov's father was a senior economic functionary who was arrested in 1938 and fell victim to the Stalinist terror. He studied at Lomonossow University from 1939 , interrupted by World War II, so that he did not graduate until 1946. In 1949 he received his doctorate from Lomonossow University under Alexander Ossipowitsch Gelfond ( On the differential independence of Dirichlet series ). From 1950 he was at the Steklov Institute in Moscow in the Department of Number Theory, headed by Ivan Matwejewitsch Vinogradow , who exerted a great influence on Postnikov, as well as the Leningrad School of Number Theory under Yuri Linnik . In 1955 he found the Postnikov formula , which reduced the estimation of sums of Dirichlet characters to the trigonometric sums. This was also the subject of the habilitation (Russian doctorate) in 1956 (investigation of Vinogradov's method for trigonometric sums, Russian). He was later a senior scientist at the Steklow Institute.

He also dealt with probability theory and in analysis with sentences of the Tauber type.

In 1966 he gave a plenary lecture at the ICM in Moscow (Recent Developments in Analytic Number Theory) with Vinogradov .
