Alexei Ivanovich Schachowskoi ( Russian Алексей Иванович Шаховской ; * 1821 ; † 1900 ) was a Russian prince , general and arms collector from the Rurikid family of the Schachowskoi .

Life

family

His father was Prince Ivan Leontjewitsch Schachowskoi (1777-1860), his mother was Sofja Alexejewna Mussin-Pushkin (1790-1878), a daughter of the bibliophile and collector Alexei Ivanovich Mussin-Pushkin . His younger brother was Alexander Ivanovich Schachowskoi (1822-1891).

career

In 1837 he began his career as an officer in the artillery , he became an officer on April 19, 1842. He gained experience in the Caucasus War . He received several medals here, including for bravery.

In 1854 he was promoted to colonel and on November 18 was appointed adjutant in His Majesty's 1st Jäger Battalion (1855-1857) . On April 17, 1860 he was appointed major general and on March 27, 1866 lieutenant general. He was considered an excellent marksman.

Even before the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 he was commander of the newly founded XI. Army corps , which took part in the battle of Plevna in the summer of 1877 after crossing the lower Danube . In 1885 he reached the rank of general of the infantry .

Some rare pieces from his former collection are in the Livrustkammaren .
