Alexei Semyonovich Zhivotov
Alexei Semyonovich Schiwotow ( Russian Алексей Семёнович Животов ; born November 1 . Jul / 14. November 1904 greg. In Kazan ; † 27. August 1964 in Leningrad ) was a Russian composer.
Life
Zhivotov studied from 1924 to 1930 at the Leningrad Conservatory with Vladimir Shcherbachev and Mikhail M. Chernov . At the same time he taught theory and instrumentation there from 1926 to 1930. Zhivotov was a member of the Leningrad Composers' Union from 1941 to 1944 and again from 1948. He also received an award for bravery for remaining in the city during the German siege . In 1957 he became an Honored Artist of the RSFSR and from 1961 to 1964 was President of the Leningrad Department of the Music Fund of the USSR.

Zhivotov's early compositions were strongly influenced by the Western musical avant-garde. His Fragments for Nonet Op. 2, composed in 1928, are characterized by the use of bitonality , fourth harmonics, glissandi and clusters . Later works (including song cycles, stage and film music) were increasingly oriented towards the demands of Soviet cultural policy.
