from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexios Melissenos Strategopulos (Ἀλέξιος Μελισσηνός Στρατηγόπουλος) was a Byzantine general of the 13th century.

In October 1259 he defeated Michael II Angelus of Epirus in the Pelagonian plain , then conquered Arta and Ioannina , but was defeated at Tricoryphus and taken prisoner. After his release, Strategopulos was entrusted with the supreme command in Thrace . He and his army attacked the city of Constantinople on the night of July 25, 1261 ( Reconquest of Constantinople 1261 ), which ended the rule of the Latins and made it possible for Michael VIII to enter on August 15. After the capture of Constantinople, Strategopulos led the fight against the despots of Epirus, was captured again, and was then exchanged.
