Alfons Geiger (born June 14, 1944 in Herbolzheim ) is a German physicist and former professor of physical chemistry at the TU Dortmund . Geiger is a pioneer in the field of molecular dynamics simulation of aqueous systems.

Career

After studying physics in Freiburg and Karlsruhe, he completed his dissertation at the Chair of Physical Chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe under the supervision of Professor Gerhard Hertz on the subject of pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR ). After completing his doctorate in 1973, he did a post-doc at the Argonne National Laboratory in the group of Aneeseur Rahman , one of the founders of molecular dynamics simulation technology . After returning to Karlsruhe, the habilitation followed in 1981. From 1981 to 1985 Geiger was senior assistant at the chair for physical chemistry at RWTH Aachen University under the direction of Manfred Zeidler (chemist) . Alfons Geiger was one of the pioneers in the field of computer simulation of liquids in Germany. He was interested in the structural and dynamic properties such. B. of water in experimentally difficult to access pressure and temperature ranges and in particular the properties of water in the vicinity of dissolved non-polar molecules or groups of molecules where hydrophobic effects occur. In 1985 he was appointed professor in Aachen and in 1987 moved to the TU Dortmund . Geiger has been retired since 2009. One of his students is the physical chemist Ralf Ludwig .
