The Alfred-Damm-Heim is a listed building in the Freital district of Wurgwitz in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .
history
As early as 1926, the sports field for the "United Turner and Singers Wurgwitz" was inaugurated near the later building site . A little later, the club members, including Alfred Damm, who later gave the hall its name, tried to build their own gym and event hall. The building application was submitted on February 28, 1928. From July 1, 1930, the association celebrated the inauguration of the “ Wurgwitz gymnasium ” on Pesterwitzer Strasse with a festival week. The construction was partly realized with the purchase of shares by the association members. This process raised 37,000 Reichsmarks . The community of Wurgwitz contributed 12,000 marks and the school community 1,500 marks. With this, the school sport of the New School could also be carried out in the house.
The large hall with stage is located in the western part of the building. In the eastern part there were cloakrooms, bathrooms and toilets as well as the boiler rooms. Furthermore, a restaurant was housed. The caretaker's apartment was on the first floor .
After the National Socialists came to power , the members of the association were denied access to the facilities. In 1935 the association's property was completely expropriated. After the Second World War , the "Kultur- und Sportgemeinschaft Wurgwitz" was founded and took over the use of the hall again. In 1953 it was given the official name "Alfred-Damm-Heim". Since then, sporting and cultural events have taken place in the building on a regular basis. The events of the Carnival Association were an annual highlight . After the reunification , the “Kultur- und Sportbund Wurgwitz” bought the house from the city of Freital. The technically obsolete building was not refurbished for the time being. The renovation of the Alfred-Damm-Heim began in 2009. It included, among other things, an extension for the restaurant and sanitary facilities .
