Alfred Brunner (diplomat)

Alfred Brunner (born August 13, 1890 in Bern ; † August 9, 1953 ) was a Swiss diplomat .

Life

Brunner was from 18 October 1924 to 1928 as an ad interim charge d'affaires of the head of the embassy in Japan . After other assignments, he acted between July 11, 1933 and September 21, 1935 as head of the consulate in Tehran . Afterwards he was appointed charge officer ad interim head of the embassy in Egypt on September 21, 1935 and acted there from December 24, 1937 to 1945 as charge holder. After a brief assignment from June 1 to August 24, 1945 as Minister in the Foreign Ministry, the Federal Political Department (today the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs ), he took over the post of envoy to Egypt on May 24, 1945 and held this position until May 11, 1948. At the same time he acted from May 1, 1946 to May 11, 1948 as envoy to Iraq .

Most recently Brunner succeeded Maximilian Jaeger as envoy in Portugal on February 24, 1948 and held this post until his death on August 9, 1953. Then Georges Bonnant was initially chargé d'affaires before Beat von Fischer became his successor there.

His son was the diplomat Edouard Brunner , who was State Secretary in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs from 1984 to 1989, Ambassador to the United States from 1989 to 1993 and Ambassador to France between 1993 and 1997 .
