Alfred Donath

Alfred Donath (born May 23, 1932 in Basel ; † June 28, 2010 in Geneva ) was a Swiss pediatrician and nuclear medicine doctor who came from a rabbi family and grew up in Yverdon . From 2000 to 2008 he was President of the Swiss Association of Israelites . In 2007 and 2008 he was Vice President of the EJC .

From 1971 until his retirement in 1997 he headed various departments at the Geneva University Hospital .

During his tenure as President of the Swiss Association of Israelites, he tried - with the support of Federal Councilor Pascal Couchepin - to have the ban on slaughter lifted in Switzerland , but abandoned these plans when signs of increasing anti-Semitism became apparent.

He was also instrumental in exposing the misappropriation of funds from the World Jewish Congress committed by Israel Singer .

Alfred Donath was married and the marriage had five children. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery of Veyrier near Geneva.
