Alfred Elmore
Alfred W. Elmore (born June 18, 1815 in Clonakilty , County Cork , † January 24, 1881 in London ) was an Irish-British painter and illustrator.
In 1842 Elmore went to Paris and Munich and spent two years in Rome. After his return to England he made his way through the pictures:
- Rienzi at the Forum in Rome and
- Origin of the dispute between the Guelfs and Ghibellines
known, but especially because of its several times engraved and cut into wood
- Invention of the stocking loom (1847).
His later pictures suffer from a lack of careful execution, but are full of life and expression and crusty in color. This includes:
- The Tuileries June 20, 1792 (1860),
- Marie Antoinette in the Temple (1861),
- Louis XIII and Louis XIV (1870),
- Queen Mary of Scotland and Darnley (1877),
- Judith and Holifernes,
- Columbus in Porto Santo,
- Pompeii (1878) and
- Lucrezia Borgia.
