Alfred W. Elmore (born June 18, 1815 in Clonakilty , County Cork , † January 24, 1881 in London ) was an Irish-British painter and illustrator.

In 1842 Elmore went to Paris and Munich and spent two years in Rome. After his return to England he made his way through the pictures:

  • Rienzi at the Forum in Rome and
  • Origin of the dispute between the Guelfs and Ghibellines

known, but especially because of its several times engraved and cut into wood

  • Invention of the stocking loom (1847).

His later pictures suffer from a lack of careful execution, but are full of life and expression and crusty in color. This includes:

  • The Tuileries June 20, 1792 (1860),
  • Marie Antoinette in the Temple (1861),
  • Louis XIII and Louis XIV (1870),
  • Queen Mary of Scotland and Darnley (1877),
  • Judith and Holifernes,
  • Columbus in Porto Santo,
  • Pompeii (1878) and
  • Lucrezia Borgia.
