Alfred Steinherr (born January 5, 1944 in Munich ) is a German economist .

Life

Steinherr studied economics at the University of Lausanne , at McMaster University ( MA , Economics) and George Washington University ( MS , Mathematics). He received his PhD from Cornell University . From 1973 to 1998 he held various positions at the Université catholique de Louvain , including the chair of international trade and finance from 1981 to 1988. He also worked for the International Monetary Fund in Washington from 1979 to 1981 and as a scientific advisor to the European Commission from 1981 to 1984 . In 1987, Steinherr began working at the European Investment Bank , which he headed as chief economist from 1995. From 1998 to 2003 he was the founding rector of the Free University of Bolzano , where he also taught as a professor of economics. Most recently from 2005 to 2007 he headed the Business Cycle Department at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin.
