Alfred Ungerer (* 1861 in Strasbourg ; † March 29, 1933 ) was a French watchmaker and tower clock manufacturer .

Life

Alfred Ungerer was the son of Auguste Théodore Ungerer (1822–1885), who, together with his brother Albert Ungerer (1813–1879), was a student and then a partner of Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué . Together they later took over Schwilgué's tower clock business and renamed it Ungerer Frères .

Alfred Ungerer and his cousin Julius Ungerer , a son of Albert Ungerer, took over the tower clockmaking business around 1903. The shop, now called J. & A. Ungerer , moved to Rue de Labroque (then Labroquer Street ).

He published treatises on the art of watchmaking, in particular historically significant literature on the astronomical clock of the Strasbourg cathedral . In one of the yearbooks for Solothurn history of the Historical Association of the Canton of Solothurn from 1929 it is mentioned: “Mr. Alfred Ungerer is one of the best experts on old art clocks. His highly anticipated, comprehensive work Les horloges astronomiques et monumentales les plus remarquables de l'antiquité jusqu'à nos jours will soon be self-published . "

His son was the watchmaker Théodore Ungerer , his grandson was the cartoonist Tomi Ungerer .
