According to his own information, Alfred Vogel learned medicine from his herbalist father and grandmother, as well as traveling to Africa, Asia and America. In 1920 Vogel opened a health food store in Basel . In 1927 he married the elementary school teacher Sophie Sommer. There were two daughters from the marriage. In 1929 he founded the A. Vogel publishing house in Teufen and brought out the monthly Das neue Leben for naturopathy and naturally healthy living, which was later renamed A.Vogel Gesundheits-Nachrichten . The magazine now appears ten times a year with a circulation of around 29,000 copies. According to his own account, his book The Little Doctor has now been sold two million times in twelve languages. Vogel's plant remedies are often used alternative remedies in the United States as well. In 1933 Vogel founded a private clinic in Teufen. 1963 followed with the company Bioforce AG (since January 1, 2020: A. Vogel AG) his own pharmaceutical company in Roggwil (Canton Thurgau) , which produces and sells its natural healing products to this day.

Vogel was convinced that most diseases arise or are favored by poor nutrition: "You are what you eat." He recommended a diet with as high a proportion of fresh fruit and vegetables as possible, as well as a balanced lifestyle in respect of nature. The interaction of a healthy lifestyle, natural remedies and healthy nutrition was his focus.
