Alfredo Astiz
Alfredo Ignacio Astiz (born November 8, 1951 ) is a former lieutenant captain (Spanish teniente de navío ) of the Argentine Navy and secret service officer during the dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla (" Process of National Reorganization ", 1976 to 1983). He is also known as "El Ángel Rubio de la Muerte" (Spanish for: "Blonder Angel of Death") because of his involvement in kidnapping and torture during this time.
Life
Astiz was a member of Task Force 332 , which was stationed at the Navy Technical School ( Escuela de Mecánica de la Armada , ESMA) in Buenos Aires during the Dirty War . This unit is held responsible for the disappearance and death of thousands of victims ( Desaparecidos ). The ESMA served as a concentration camp and is considered a center where political prisoners were held, tortured and killed without a legal basis. Astiz "specialized" in infiltrating civil protest groups.
Astiz was captured by British forces in the Falklands War and, despite being wanted by Sweden and France by international arrest warrant for the disappearance of citizens of these countries in Argentina, he was returned to Argentina. A French court sentenced him in absentia to life imprisonment in 1990. After the amnesty by the Argentine President Carlos Menem, Astiz was the last frigate captain.
After the Supreme Court in 2003 Argentine amnesty laws had, which concerned the crimes of the military junta canceled ( " final stroke Law " and " Law on the duty of obedience "), was Astiz in Argentina because of his alleged crime again in court. On October 26, 2011, he was sentenced to life imprisonment along with 14 other defendants including Oscar Antonio Montes .
