Alfred Dornheim

Alfred Gustav Wilhelm Hermann Dornheim (born April 7, 1909 in Hamburg ; † October 27, 1969 in Mendoza ), also known as Alfredo Dornheim , was a German professor and professor of German. He worked in Argentina as a professor and co-founder of the International Association for German Studies.

Life

Alfred Dornheim studied at the University of Hamburg . During his studies he was active in the Corps Irminsul , of which he belonged until his death. In 1934 Dornheim received his doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty. The German-Argentinian Cultural Institute in Buenos Aires appointed him in 1937 as a professor for the German language. He later moved to Mendoza and from 1943 to 1969 he was director of the Institute for German Studies at the Philosophical Faculty. In 1949 he became head of the section for German literature at the Institute for Modern Literary Studies. He founded the Argentine Goethe Society in Mendoza and the "La Cultura Alemana" institute in Cuyano in 1960 , which was under his direction until it was taken over by the Goethe Institute. He was a co-founder of the International Association for German Studies and an honorary member of the Institute for Language and Classical Literature, Archeology, Ethnology and Philosophy at the National University of Cuyo , as well as an honorary member of the Institute for German Culture "Albertus Magnus" of the Catholic University of Chile .

He has directed publications of journals and academic works, including the journal El Boletin de Estudios Germanicos . He was also a recognized translator of important works by German authors. One result of his personal work was a work on Goethe that was published by the Philosophical Faculty: Contribuciones a la historia mitológica de la literatura alemana de Goethe a la actualidad . Further publications were: La canción popular a través de los siglos ; Fuentes virgilianas del Waltharius ; The concepto de formación en el pensamiento filosófico-pedagógica de J. Herder .
