The algae lice ( Cocconeis ) are a genus of the diatoms (Bacillariophyta). A striking feature is the shell, which is often curved like a turtle shell, with an elliptical shape. Most species of this genus live epiphytically on other algae and aquatic plants . Well-known species are the arched algae louse ( Cocconeis pediculus ) and the flat algae louse ( Cocconeis placentula ). Both occur in lakes and ponds.
