Ali Sami Boyar

Ali Sami Boyar (born February 15, 1880  ? † September 22, 1967 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish painter, museum director, bureaucrat, journalist and officer.

life and work

Ali Sami Boyar graduated from Heybeli Deniz Harp Okulu (Eng .: Heybeli Marine War School) in 1901 . He made his higher artistic training at the Sanayi-i Nefise College, from which he graduated in 1908. His teachers there included Osman Hamdi Bey , Salvatore Valeri , Ömer Adil and Joseph Warnia Zarzecki . After graduating as the best of the year, he began teaching at the Sea War School as an art teacher. In 1909 he went to Paris to complete his artistic training at the local art school École des beaux-arts and in Fernand Cormon's studio . In 1914 he returned to Istanbul and resigned from the army with the rank of captain. In the same year he became the director of the Bahriye or Sea Museum. In 1918 his pictures were shown at exhibitions in Vienna and Berlin. Between 1922 and 1923 he was the director of the Office for Foundations (tr: Vakiflar). When the first stamps of the Turkish Republic were printed in 1925, it was Boyar whose pictures they adorned. In 1926 his pictures could be seen on the first banknotes of the young republic. In the same years his paintings were exhibited in London and Paris. From 1935 to 1941 he was the director of the Hagia Sofia Museum in Istanbul. In 1944 he was one of the co-founders of the Association of Soldier Painters who were among the pioneers of Western art in Turkey. In the same year he retired and started a career as an art journalist for several newspapers and magazines. Boyar's pictures are only realistic. However, one can also see an impressionistic influence in his pictures.

Freemasonry

Ali Sami Boyar was a Freemason according to the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Turkey . His light was brought in on January 1, 1915.
