Ali Yazdani

Ali Yazdani (* around 1966) is an American physicist who deals with experimental solid-state physics.

Yazdani studied physics at the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in 1989 and at Stanford University with a master's degree in 1991 and a doctorate in applied physics in 1995 with Aharon Kapitulnik . From 1994 to 1997 he was a post-doctoral student at the IBM Almaden Research Center with Donald M. Eigler . He became Assistant Professor in 1997, Associate Professor in 2003 and Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2004 and Professor at Princeton University in 2005 . Since 2015 he has been Class of 1909 Professor at Princeton and director of the Center for Complex Materials there.

In 2003/04 he was visiting professor at Stanford. In 2016 he was Joliot Visiting Professor at the École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la ville de Paris.

Among other things, he dealt with two-dimensional electron systems in solids ( Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions , superconductor-insulator transition) and one-dimensional systems (such as electrical resistance in atomic wires and atoms with Donald Eigler), (magnetic) impurities (defects) in superconductors, weight Fermions, high temperature superconductors and topological surface states and topological insulators . Among other things, he succeeded in experimentally observing Majorana fermions in chains of ferromagnetic atoms on superconductors. He and his group developed special high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopes to investigate these questions.

In 2016 he was a Loeb Lecturer , in 2014 he received a Humboldt Research Award and from 2000 to 2002 he was a Sloan Fellow. In 2015 he was Einstein Lecturer at the Weizmann Institute , in 2011 Pagels Lecturer at the Aspen Center and Kavli Lecturer in Delft. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the American Physical Society (2009), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2015) and a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2019).
