Alice Dixon Le Plongeon (born December 12, 1851 in London , † June 8, 1910 in New York ) was an English photographer, amateur archaeologist, explorer and author. She was one of the first to excavate and study the ancient Mayan sites of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal .

Early life

Alice Dixon was born in London on December 12, 1851. Her parents were Henry Dixon and Sophia Cook.

Henry Dixon was commissioned in the late nineteenth century for his contribution to the development of panchromatic photography and for his photos of London architecture for the Society for Photographic Relics of Old London. Alice learned the basics of photography from her father and worked as an assistant in his studio.

Excavations

In November 1875, the Le Plongeons dug a large statue near the platform of the eagles and jaguars at Chicken Itza. The statue shows a man lying down.

The Le Plongeons believed it was a portrayal of Prince Chaacmol. This is how the statue was called Chacmool and was praised by the American Geographical Society as a great archaeological find.

Flint stones, pieces of ceramic and a piece of jadeite were also found near the statue. Augustus had placed this in a golden brooch and given it to his wife. Alice wore the talisman for the rest of her life.

Other artifacts were found near the statue, including flint, pieces of ceramic, and a piece of jadeite that Augustus had placed in a gold brooch. Alice would keep and wear this talisman for the rest of her life.
