Alistair Burt

Alistair Burt (* 25. May 1955 in Bury , Lancashire ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party .

Life

Burt attended Bury Grammar School and studied at St John's College , Oxford . He is married and lives in Wootton , Bedfordshire .

From 1983 to 1997 he was the first MP in the House of Commons, where he represented the constituency of Bury North . From 1995 he acted as Minister of State (State Secretary) in the Department of Social Security . In the 1997 general election , he lost his seat to Labor candidate David Chaytor . Four years later he returned to Parliament for the constituency of North East Bedfordshire . After the Conservatives' victory in the 2010 general election , he assumed the post of Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the State Department in the government of David Cameron , which he held until 2013. From 2015 to 2016 he served as Minister of State for Care and Support in the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs , and in 2016 he moved to the Ministry of Development Cooperation , where he became Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa and Minister of State for International Development . He remained so until his resignation on March 25, 2019. He was followed by Andrew Murrison .

On September 4, 2019, Burt was expelled from the Conservative Party faction due to his parliamentary opposition to Brexit without an EU exit agreement. He then announced that he would not run again in the next general election due to these different political views.
