An alcoholic hallucinosis is a form of alcoholic psychosis and the result of a lesion of the brain by alcohol. The person concerned feels insulted and abused by (hallucinated) voices. This disorder is classified as F10.52 in the ICD-10 .

Symptoms

The clinical picture is characterized by acoustic hallucinations (insults, threats) and an anxious, tense mood with a tendency to flee. In alcohol hallucinosis there are seldom optical and far more often acoustic delusions that can assume the symptoms of schizophrenia. The classic alcohol withdrawal symptom (tremor) is absent. In alcohol hallucinosis, the state of consciousness is usually clear and those affected have no disorientation. If perceptions of persecution predominate in the context of hallucinosis, it is also referred to as "alcohol paranoia".

therapy

The therapy is alcohol withdrawal under medical supervision and additional weaning and support (e.g. psychotherapeutic, self-help group). In the case of recurrent or chronic disease, the administration of chlordiazepoxide ( benzodiazepine ) or haloperidol (neuroleptic) is provided.
