Scheme gallery grave - ( French Allée couverte )

The Allée couverte of Mauny is east of the hamlet of Mauny, near the Seine and the D 265 road in a forest near Rouen . It is the only gallery tomb in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy in France .

Most of the remaining bearing stones have mostly been relocated. However, there is an in-situ dividing stone with half a soul hole . The rectangular chamber was about 7.5 meters long, 1.0 meters wide and oriented downhill towards the Seine. The excavation revealed the presence of an antechamber and the main chamber and made it possible to see the internal order of the monument.

The Allée couverte was excavated in the 1970s. The gallery grave originally had two parallel rows of supporting stones. At the time of the excavation, the north-east wall was well preserved because the orthostats were in the slope of the earth. Only one of seven stones fell into the gallery grave. On the other hand, the construction of the road that borders the monument has resulted in the fall of most of the western bearing stones. Before the excavation, three of them were almost four meters long. Two recently fell over, leaving only one supporting stone.

Much of the interest in the Mauny Gallery Tomb stems from the excellent preservation conditions of the bones of over 115 people, which remained almost intact between the end of the Neolithic and the excavation. It was possible to study the stratigraphy of the filling and the arrangement of the bones. Among the skulls were numerous, quite unusual for Normandy, with trepanning (one skull had retained the trepanning disk). The archaeological material found other than the bones was poor. Only the jewelry was numerous, 122 pearls made of amber , bones, shells or stone.
