Allan Ramsay (born October 13, 1713 in Edinburgh , † August 10, 1784 in Dover ) was a Scottish portrait painter . He is the eldest son of the writer Allan Ramsay .

Life

Ramsay first learned from the Swedish painter Hans Huyssing in London and then worked for three years in Rome . On his return he first worked in Edinburgh. In 1757 he painted a portrait of the then Prince of Wales , later George III. , whereby he became increasingly known as a portrait painter in aristocratic circles. In 1762 he moved to London and in 1767 became court painter to George III, who had ruled since 1760. appointed.

Ramsay was stressed by his work as a court painter. It ensured him a regular income, but left him little time for anything other than portraits. He was also barely able to develop his style as a painter. In order to be able to do the work that came up, he resorted to the help of assistants.

Ramsay's career ended when he injured his right arm in an accident in 1773.
