allegro is a software for library catalogs , a library database system that was developed from July 1980 to December 2015 by the Braunschweig University Library and funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture . The development then continues externally, based on open sources.

properties

allegro is an autonomous, platform-independent ( MS-DOS , UNIX , Solaris , Linux , MS Windows from NT upwards), set-oriented database system, which was first published in 1988 with version number 8.5 and is now used by many libraries.

Allegro was originally written in the C programming language and is therefore also known under the name allegro-C . Allegro has been based on a class library written in C ++ since 1996 . allegro is a package of application programs with names such as presto , index , update , a99 , which has been supplemented by the client-server system avanti since 1995 .

A characteristic that distinguishes allegro-C from other renowned library programs is the high flexibility and adaptability of the software, which is achieved through the use of proprietary scripting languages . This is why allegro-C is often used in special libraries and for cataloging special collections. Both the British Library and the Bodleian Library use allegro-C to index their oriental collections.

Allegro is free to download and use. The software package includes alF , the allegro lending functions, ORDER , the allegro order management, the magazine management ZAboM as well as web connection programs such as PHPAC , a PHP interface, the a35 package , a platform-independent program for the use of allegro databases in the network. The largest allegro database is the "Union catalog of machine-readable data from German libraries" (VK) with around 15 million data records . Numerous well-known libraries manage and present their holdings online using the software.

From May 2011, the source texts (C and C ++) of the class library were released. Furthermore, a new web OPAC for allegro data was created on the basis of the Vufind open source package . There are also allegro mobile applications with a35 - these are optimized for two variants, for tablets and smartphones (sample databases include bolero - classic collection, database vegetation ecology, demo OPAC Braunschweig UB, ...). HTML5, JS, jQuery, CSS, PHP, JOB-Flex serve as the basis.

future

When the project supervisor Bernhard Eversberg retired at the end of 2015, there was a change in responsibilities: In a message, the Braunschweig University Library described version 35 as a "successful completion" of the development. However, this only completes the commitment of the University Library (since 1981) in development work. The University Library continues to operate the mail forum.

The development continues externally. The complete source programs have been freely available as open source under Apache license since December 2012. The system is free of third-party components and therefore remains operational until the end of the Windows and Linux era.

Eversberg operates a current and further developed offer on another server under the name allegro-B , including the latest version. In particular, the handling of RDA and MARC21 data as well as the running properties under Windows 10 have been further developed. Updated documentation, parameter files and scripts for web applications are also available.
