The Allen long-eared bat ( Idionycteris phyllotis ) is a species of bat from the smooth-nosed family (Vespertilionidae). She lives in the mountainous regions of the southwestern United States as well as western and central Mexico .
description
Characteristic of this bat are the long, slightly curved ears, which are 34 to 43 millimeters long, which is a lot given a head body length of 50 to 70 millimeters. The weight is around 8 to 16 grams and the wingspan is 30 to 34 centimeters. The relatively long fur is predominantly black, the hair often ends in a white-gray tip.
Way of life
The habitat of these bats are mountainous, mostly tree-covered regions. Caves, crevices or overhanging rocks serve as sleeping places. They live in small groups of 5 to 30 animals outside of the mating season and, like most bats, are nocturnal. In the evening they go in search of food, primarily consuming moths .
Reproduction
Little is known about reproduction. The female usually gives birth to a single young in June or July. Up to 100 females join together to form nurseries for birth and rearing youngsters, while the males mostly live solitary during this time.
threat
Although mining and urban sprawl have disrupted the bats' natural habitat and in some places led to a reduction in populations, they are not considered endangered species overall.
