All Saints' Cathedral in Cairo

The All Saints Cathedral or All Saints' Cathedral is a church building in Cairo . It is the seat of the Diocese of Egypt of the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East , which also includes the countries of North Africa and the Horn of Africa .

The third cathedral in use today was consecrated in 1988 and is located in Zamalek , a residential area on an island in the Nile . The building and land were financed by the Egyptian government in return for the demolition of the previous building to build a bridge over the Nile.

The building complex also houses the offices of the diocese and the bishop, as well as projects and service providers, including EpiscoCare and Refuge Egypt, which operates in the Cairo refugee communities. The church is used by several parishes, the largest of which are Arab, English, and Sudanese.

The concrete structure has a cross-shaped floor plan and a crown-shaped roof. The roof has been described by the Cairo Observer as resembling a lotus flower . The building was designed by the Egyptian architects Awad and Selim Kamel, who also created the design for the Cathedral of St. Mark in the Coptic Orthodox Church in Cairo.

The first All Saints Cathedral in Cairo was completed in 1878. The second was consecrated in 1938 and was located behind the Egyptian Museum overlooking the Nile. The design by Adrian Gilbert Scott , a grandson of George Gilbert Scott , was demolished 40 years later to make way for the construction of the October 6th Bridge .
