The All Saints Chapel in Göriach is a chapel in the municipality of Virgen in East Tyrol ( Lienz district ). The chapel is located at a height of 1,694 meters high above the village of Göriach and, according to tradition, is the oldest sacred building in the Virgental .

location

The All Saints Chapel was built on a rocky slope west of the Firschnitzbach at an altitude of 1,694 meters. The chapel is located between the corridors “aufm Wändlen”, “Frobmtal” and “Kendlach”. The chapel can be reached via a hiking trail that connects Marin with the Firschnitzalm or Gotschaunalm.

history

According to tradition, the All Saints Chapel was built in the 11th century. It is mentioned for the first time in 1614 in a visitation protocol from 1614 as a chapel with an altar. In 1676 the altar was mentioned in writing as no longer consecrated. The masses were therefore read on a portable altar at that time . In the course of the Josephine reforms, the chapel was closed in 1787 but reopened on December 28, 1799. In 1800 a way of the cross was established. The pilgrims mainly used the two Gothic cult figures on the baroque altar as objects of worship. The chapel was restored between 2001 and 2004 and re-consecrated on October 29, 2004.

Building

The All Saints Chapel is an asymmetrical chapel, the floor plan of which was adapted to the rocky slope and forms an irregular segment of a circle. The outer walls were made as field stone walls with several layers of plaster, the roof was made with board shingles. On the roof there is a wooden ridge turret with arched sound windows and a curved tent roof, which is crowned by a ball and cross. The entrance was carried out on the north side through a round arch portal, the western outer wall is broken through by various windows that have a deep, diagonally cut reveal.

Way of the Cross and Cross Group

The Way of the Cross to the All Saints Chapel begins above Marin and heads north to the chapel. The stations were designed with popular picture panels that were painted over several times. The end of the Way of the Cross is formed by a group of crosses from the end of the 18th century, which was situated on the rock next to the chapel. It consists of three crosses with Jesus and the two thieves, whereby the crosses are made of wood with several polychrome layers. The group of crosses, which is protected as a historical monument, like the chapel, also has simple, folk sculptures, whereby the crosses have been renewed and covered with a clapboard covering.
