Political orientation

The party's official goal is to further liberalize Nigeria.

Despite its claim to represent the whole of Nigerian society and the fact that its current chairman, Ahmed Abdulkadir , is from the north of the country, the AD is widely viewed as a party that primarily serves the interests of the Yoruba ethnic group in the south-west of the country represents. In fact, the AD is ideologically based on the principles of the Afenifere , a Yoruba socio-cultural organization that exerts a not inconsiderable influence on politicians from various factions within Nigeria. The Afenifere fought together with NADECO , a militant pro-democratic organization, the military dictatorships under Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha .

The motto of the party is "Justice, Peace and Progress" (translated: Justice, Peace and Progress).

Principles

The AD has set out the following principles in its statutes:

  • Promotion of a democratic social order
  • Defending the Constitution of Nigeria
  • Fight against poverty and corruption
  • Enforcement of religious tolerance
  • Promoting Nigeria's Economic Development
  • Implementation of human rights for all Nigerians
  • Strengthening the rights of farmers and workers
  • Support for rural areas
  • Creating new opportunities for youth in education, politics and society
  • Improving relations with the countries of the world
  • Promote science and research
  • Prohibition of all acts that could harm the well-being of the Nigerian people

history

On September 9, 1998 , the Southern Leader's Forum (SLF), an umbrella organization of 18 southern Nigerian political organizations, joined forces with the United Democratic Congress (UDC) , a northern Nigerian organization, and the United Party for National Salvation to form this new, nationwide alliance, with the aim of promoting the democratization and liberalization of Nigerian society after the end of the military dictatorship . Party chairman was Ayo Adebanjo .

In the elections of February and March 1999 , the AD won 68 of 360 House of Representatives - and 20 of 109 Senate seats, making it the third strongest political force. The presidential candidate she supported, Samuel Oluyemi Falae , whom she favored together with the conservative All People's Party , lost to Olusegun Obasanjo .

In the April 2003 elections, the party received 8.8% of the vote, 34 of 360 seats in the House of Representatives and 18 of 109 seats in the Senate.
