Alligator Island is an 800 m long, towering and rocky island in the Bay of Winds off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . It is 4 miles west of Jones Rocks .
It was discovered by the team at the west base of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . They named the island after its shape, which is reminiscent of an alligator .
