Alloa was a whiskey distillery in Alloa , Clackmannanshire , Scotland . It is also known as the Grange known and does not involve the 1817-1829 in Morayshire existing Grange -Brennerei or The Grange -Brennerei in Burntisland be confused.
The distillery was founded by Alexander Glen in Alloa in 1795 . In the first decades of its existence it changed hands several times and in 1834 had to declare bankruptcy. It was taken over by John Philp & Co. , who switched production from malt whiskey to grain whiskey . It became important for whiskey production because Philp was the first commercially operated distillery to equip it with a coffey still and thus laid an important foundation for the large-scale industrial production of grain whiskey . After the owners of the distillery changed again several times, in 1880 it became the property of Scottish Grain Distillers (SGD), which they probably closed shortly afterwards.
