Burntisland is a city in the Scottish council area of Fife . It is located about seven kilometers south-southwest of Kirkcaldy and 14 km east of Dunfermline on the north bank of the Firth of Forth . On the opposite bank, about seven kilometers away, is Edinburgh . In 2011 Burntisland had 6,269 inhabitants.

history

It is said that the Romans under Agricola used the natural harbor of Burntisland as a base around the year 83. In the 12th century a fortress and a church were built near the port. Jacob V made the city a Royal Burgh and expanded the port for military purposes and as a commercial port. First fish and later coal were handled. Between 1786 and 1927 was in the nationally significant distillery The Grange in Burntisland whiskey burned . At the end of the First World War , an aluminum smelter and shipyards settled in Burntisland.

Burntisland is a few kilometers south of the A9 coast road that connects Edinburgh with Aberdeen , and about ten kilometers east of the M90 from Dunfermline to Perth , which crosses the Firth of Forth as the A90 . In 1850 the world's first train ferry was installed from Granton (now part of Edinburgh) to Burntisland. Burntisland station is now served by First ScotRail on the Fife Circle Line .
