features

The moths have a wingspan of 40 to 50 millimeters and look very similar to the hawthorn owl ( Allophyes oxyacanthae ). In Allophyes corsica , the white mark on the tornus ( inner angle ) is more curved and clearer. The hind wings are darker and browner, the transverse line is less pronounced. Other differences exist in the genitals of both sexes.

The subspecies A. corsica parenzani is paler and differs slightly in the genitals in the males, but almost not in the females.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Distribution of the species of the genus Allophyes in Europe, Allophyes corsica orange

Allophyes corsica prefers warm and dry habitats, such as sparsely forested regions, oak forests in the karst or bushy areas from the lowlands to the hilly areas down to the lower elevations of the mountains. The moths are very common in places and, depending on the region, fly in one generation (univoltin) from mid-October to the end of December. Little is known about the early stages. The way of life is probably similar to that of the hawthorn owl. The moths are attracted in large numbers by light sources and sugary baits .

A. corsica spp. corsica occurs in the northern Pyrenees, Corsica and Sardinia. A. corsica spp. parenzani occurs in Sicily and southern Italy.

Systematics

Allophyes corsica was first described as Allophyes oxyacanthae var corsica by Arnold Spuler in 1905. The spp. parenzani was first described in 1976 by Edmond de Laever as Allophyes parenzani . Allophyes corsica is the sister species of the hawthorn owl ( A. oxyacanthae ) within the genus. It is not clear whether there are hybrids with A. alfaroi in the Pyrenees.
