Alma Gluck (born May 11, 1884 in Iași , Romania ; † October 27, 1938 in New York ; former name Reba Feinsohn ) was a Romanian-American opera singer ( soprano ). At the beginning of the 20th century she was one of the most famous singers in the world.

Life

Her parents were Leon and Zara Feinsohn and she had a sister named Cecile Feinsohn. Alma Gluck was of Russian Jewish descent. She came to the United States at the age of six . She studied singing with Arturo Buzzi-Peccia , Jean de Reszke and Marcella Sembrich . From her first marriage (1902) to Bernhard Gluck, she had a daughter, Abigail Marcia, who later became the writer Marcia Davenport . In 1914 she married the violinist Efrem Zimbalist . From this marriage the children Marie (* 1915) and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (1918-2014) emerged.

  • She was one of the first singers to make recordings, u. a. together with Enrico Caruso . Her recording "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" has sold over a million copies.
