from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The almanac of dramatic games for social entertainment in the country is an almanac that was published by August von Kotzebue from 1803 to 1820. A volume was published annually in which Kotzebue assembled three to six dramas . A total of 100 works by the author appeared in the almanac until Kotzebue's death. His total of over 200 dramas are cataloged in the reference work Kotzebues Dramen - Ein Lexikon .

The almanac after Kotzebue's death

After Kotzebue's murder in 1819, the almanac continued to be published annually until 1834. The editors were initially Paul Gotthelf Kummer until 1826 and Karl August Lebrun from 1827 . They had authors send them short dramas and printed them out.

The volumes that appeared after Kotzebue's death contain a total of 72 works by 30 different authors, with 8 titles remaining without an author's name.

purpose

In the first volume of the Almanac (1803), Kotzebue wrote in the preface:

“ To build an actual theater for lovers , you rarely have the time, space or opportunity. This also includes a larger number of contributors who are difficult to unite under one [sic] hat. Even the cost of building a theater, decorating, etc. would be a deterrent. It is just as difficult to find pieces that are appropriate to the needs, the time and the strengths of a small society.
What if I gradually delivered a number of small pieces or scenes to the audience , sometimes touching, sometimes funny or farcical? Pieces that would only take four or five people and a couple of Spanish walls? which one can distribute, learn and perform in two days? "
