Paul Gotthelf Kummer (born December 29, 1750 in Mutzschen , † February 25, 1835 in Leipzig ) was a German bookseller and publisher.

Life

Paul Gotthelf was a son of the pastor in Mutzschen Georg Friedrich Kummer (1708–1771) and Christiana Elisabeth.

Career

Kummer was an apprentice to Johann Samuel Heinsius the Younger (1734–1807). He spent his assistantship in Zurich and in the Dyck bookstore in Leipzig. In 1776 he founded his business in Leipzig and in 1777 took over the Saalbach publishing house, which was also located in Leipzig. In 1813 he also acquired the publishing house of the former Stahl'schen Buchhandlung in Jena , which he integrated into his business.

He also founded a flourishing commission bookshop in 1790 with which he became one of the most respected commission agents in Leipzig. In 1834 he handed the business over to his son.

family

Kummer married Sophie Cichorius († 1800), sister of the professor of anatomy in Dorpat Ludwig Emil Cichorius (1740-1829). The marriage resulted in 11 children, of whom Eduard Kummer († 1860) took over the father's business as a bookseller.
