The Almaty Arena ( Kazakh and Russian Алматы Арена ) is a stadium complex in the Kazakh city of Almaty . It was built on the occasion of the Winter Universiade 2017 and includes two multi-purpose halls and a swimming pool.

history

After Almaty was awarded the contract to host the 2017 Winter Universiade in 2011, the city had to build an ice rink with a capacity of at least 12,000 spectators in order to meet the standards of the International Ice Hockey Federation . In March 2014, Mayor Akhmetschan Yessimov announced the construction of a new multi-purpose hall in the northwest of the city in the Alatau district . Construction work began on July 11, 2014. The Almaty Arena opened on September 18, 2016.

As part of the Winter Universiade 2017, both the opening and closing ceremonies took place in the arena. Sports competitions that were held in the arena were curling and figure skating .

The arena complex includes three halls. There is an ice palace with a capacity of 12,000 spectators, an ice arena with a capacity of 3,000 spectators and a swimming pool .
