Alois Leidwein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alois Leidwein (born February 18, 1964 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ), publicist and agricultural scientist. From 1992 to 2002 he was General Secretary of the Austrian Young Farmers' Union.

He is currently working as a research manager (Head of Research and Knowledge Transfer at the Agency for Health and Food Safety - AGES).

Career

Alois Leidwein studied agriculture / agricultural economics at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and law at the University of Vienna . He has a doctorate in the field of agricultural policy / agricultural law (BOKU) and a doctorate in the field of administrative law / European law ( University of Vienna ).

From 1991 to 2002 he was an agricultural policy expert in the Austrian Farmers 'Union and from 1992 to 2002 the Secretary General of the Austrian Young Farmers ' Union . During this time he was seconded to the EU Commission as a national expert for a few months and then as an expert in the team for the Austrian accession negotiations to the EU. From 1998 to 2002 he was secretary of the political conference of agricultural councils and editor-in-chief of the agricultural policy monthly idk.

Under his aegis as young farmers 'secretary, the young farmers' union was spun off and positioned as an independent organization. In 2000, he implemented the young farmers' calendar, which was conceptualized as a pin-up calendar, in what was then still an ultra-conservative farming environment, thereby implementing a self-financing image campaign for young farmers. The young farmers calendar is still the best-selling calendar in Austria.

At the end of 1992 / beginning of 2003, Leidwein designed the Austrian Program for Environmentally Sound Agriculture (ÖPUL) as a permanent economic compensation measure for Austrian agriculture after joining the EU. The innovative thing about ÖPUL was the extensive roll-up of extensification measures that were previously offered and funded individually or only regionally. The concept was taken up by agricultural policy in 1993/94 when it became apparent that other compensatory measures for agriculture could not be implemented in the EU accession negotiations. He played a key role in shaping the EU membership campaign for the agricultural sector.

In 2002, Leidwein switched to the diplomatic service in Geneva . Since 2007 he has been working for the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and is responsible for research and knowledge transfer in AGES (health of soil, plants, animals, people and food security).
