Aloys Odenthal
Aloys Odenthal (born March 8, 1912 in Düsseldorf ; † November 30, 2003 ibid) was a German architect , resistance fighter against the Nazi regime and an honorary citizen of Düsseldorf .
Resistance in Düsseldorf
In April 1945 he took part in an action by the citizens of Düsseldorf to surrender the city to the advancing American forces without a fight. (See the main article, Aktion Rheinland .)
After 1945
After the war, the architect and devout Catholic Aloys Odenthal played a key role in the reconstruction of the Düsseldorf churches and kept memories of war crimes and the Nazi regime alive until his death.
Honors
For his services to Düsseldorf, he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Düsseldorf on October 23, 1985. In Düsseldorf-Gerresheim , where he lived and worked, Aloys-Odenthal-Platz was named after him between Neusser Tor and Alter Markt. In addition, a community elementary school, the Aloys-Odenthal-Schule in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim, has been named after him since mid-2007. Odenthal has a grave of honor in the Gerresheimer Waldfriedhof .
