Phonematics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phonematics is a linguistic term that is used differently depending on the context . It can be used as:

  • Synonymous with phonology , as
  • Generic term for phonetics and phonology or as
  • Term for (segmental) phonology in contrast to prosody , the generic term for both is then the phonemics .

When used as a synonym for phonology or as a generic term for phonetics and phonology, phonematics corresponds to the current use of phonemics , which is why the two terms are also regarded as synonyms.
