The black eye-spot crab ( Alpheus soror ) is a big popping crab. It lives in coral reefs and has so far been detected in Sri Lanka , the Maldives , the Philippines and in the Australian Coral Sea . It is probably more widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific .

features

The eye spot cancer reaches a maximum body length of eight centimeters and is colored orange. Carapace and abdomen are dotted white. The scissors and legs are purple or bluish, the tips of the scissors are orange. There is a noticeable, large eye-spot on the second segment of the abdomen . Like other squirrel crabs, it is able to generate a jet of water and a loud noise with one of the two claws by suddenly letting the dactylus, the movable claw joint, snap against the propodus, the immobile claw joint.

Way of life

The eye spot crab lives very hidden in caves they have dug themselves or in natural tunnels and crevices in the reef. In contrast to many other species of the Alpheus genus , it does not live in symbiosis with guardian gobies . However, it also does not drive dwarf perch out of its caves (aquarium observation on Pseudochromis dilectus and P. fridmanni , A. Luty). The popcorn was observed around the aquarium while cleaning parasite-infested damselfish and surgeon fish. The fish asked the crab to clean its cave (observation A. Luty, described in: DATZ 5/2009).
