Start of the 96th Alster relay on May 25, 2009

The Alster relay was a relay race around the Hamburg Inner Alster . The first event took place on August 22, 1909, and the last on March 25, 2012. This made the Alster relay Germany's oldest street relay and, for a time, it was also Europe's largest number of participants. Except for 1915, 1941, 1944, 1945 and 2005, the relay took place every year.

The route ran counter-clockwise around the Hamburg Inner Alster (start: Jungfernstieg ), was 1792 m long and paved throughout. A long distance relay (three times 1792 m) and various competitions were held in which the 1792 m lap was divided between several runners.
