The Altınapa Dam ( Turkish Altınapa Barajı ) is located about 14 km west of the Turkish city of Konya in the municipality of Küçükmuhsine in the southwest of the Selçuklu district in Anatolia , Konya Province . It is the successor to a smaller dam that was built in 1954.

Surname

The reservoir was named after the Seljuk caravanserai Altınapa Han . It was located near today's southern bank and was flooded when the reservoir was built. The Han, which was built around 1201 to 1202 by Şemsettin Altınapa, the vizier of the Sultan Rukn ad-Din Suleiman Shah , was in ruins right from the start of the dam construction. When the water level is very low, the caravanserai can fall dry and can be viewed, the last time this happened on December 6, 2017. geography

The earthfill dam consists largely of rocks and has a volume of 325,000 m³. It can be accessed via a narrow street. The new dam was built from 1963 to 1967 on behalf of the state water authority DSİ .

The reservoir was created by flooding the Meram Gorge. It is mainly fed by two streams: one is the Meram ( Meram Çayı in Turkish ), which is also called Dolay Çayı above the reservoir; it rises on the Aladağ near Derbent . The second stream is the Çeltöğün Deresi , the source of which is at Atağrı Tepesi.

The lake itself is 1.243 m above sea level and, depending on the level, is two to three kilometers long and about 0.8 to 1 km wide.

The reservoir is primarily used to supply drinking water for the greater Konya area and to irrigate the northern Dolay valley. Around 15 million m³ of drinking water are provided annually. A total of 1,400 hectares in the Meram Valley are irrigated from the dam.

Another reason for building the dam was flood protection for the city of Meram and the greater Konya area.

There is a fishing cooperative that has leased the fishing rights. Mainly carp are caught. Private fishing is prohibited. Swimming is not allowed, but is not recommended with an average water temperature of 13 ° C.

In 2015, the Altınapa Baraji recreational area was opened.

Problems

The reservoir suffers greatly from the inflow of sediments . The northern part is already heavily silted up and swampy.

In 2008 there were cracks in two places in the dam shaft. The damage was repaired, but it remained unclear why it was caused. The risk of new cracks still exists.

In 2012 the emergency valves and the pressure lines had to be replaced due to excessive corrosion. A leakage water infiltration was found in the water inlet structure, which led to contamination of the drinking water.

Due to the proximity to the megacity Konya, cases of fish poaching occur frequently.
