Altbettingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Altbettingen is a deserted area in Bettingen , a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located northeast of Bettingen on a slope and is the only one in the area.

history

It was first mentioned on February 17, 844. The Altbettingen district is larger than that of the neighboring settlement of today's Bettingen (formerly Frenkingen). Three Roman manor districts were within the Altbettingen district.

The place was abandoned by the residents after the plague in the 17th century. They moved to Frenkingen, today's Bettingen.

In the north, the Höllenbach delimits the residential and military area that was used until the 17th century; the east side was then protected by a ditch. The ruins are criss-crossed by the remains of the enclosure and building walls. The walls of a rectangular building and a ruined tower in the northeast corner of the area can still be seen. The quarry stone masonry extends up to the third or fourth floor on the east side and up to the second floor on the north side. It is possibly the tower of the Church of St. Peter.
